Well, you know, sleep apnea is something that many, many Americans have. Somewhere up to 70 million Americans have it. Most don't even realize they have the problem. That's how I got diagnosed, just by chance. Snoring, you know, I snored at nighttime, and that's kind of a classic sign of it. But what ends up happening is I was stopping breathing 33 times an hour. And most people just don't realize they have the problem. But once I found out that I did, we started an organization called the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea. And that group now, we help teach dentists around the country not necessarily—I mean, they can learn to treat sleep apnea if they want to, but I just want them to screen their patients because there's no better place than in the dental office.
At the same time, I got involved with the National Football League and with the Reggie White Foundation. Reggie died of sleep apnea at 43-years-old. So I got very involved with them. And now we're working with a lot of the NFL players. Eighty percent of the NFL are linemen, so it doesn't matter if you're fat or just all muscle. When you've got a large neck, when you're asleep, that neck will collapse down and it makes it difficult to breathe. And so those things have really made a difference in getting out public awareness. And if we can educate—the more patients we can educate, the more people we can educate, then we can really turn this thing around so that people understand what their problem is.
