NOW PLAYING: All-ceramic Crowns

What's important about talking about crowns is the all-ceramic technology that's available today. We have technology that is CAD/CAM dentistry. We can actually do the procedure, an all-ceramic crown, in a single visit. We can do it in about, oh, we have the new milling machines that are out now. And those milling machines can mill a brand new crown out of a solid block of engineered porcelain that's much like your natural tooth structure. And we can do it in about five minutes as far as how long it takes to mill. The patient'll come in and we, you know, get them ready to do the work. And an hour later, they walk out and they have a brand new tooth.

But with all-ceramic technology, not only do they—are they strong, but they look just like natural teeth. And a lot of the anterior teeth that we do, we use some of the same types of porcelains that we use for porcelain veneers with the Empress porcelains and even Lumineers and what we call feldspathic porcelains, which are absolutely incredible as far as their aesthetics.

With dental implants, one of the neat things is when the implant's placed in its heel, we can go in and we unscrew a little center screw—the patient doesn't have to be numb—and we put a little post on it. And we can now use ceramic posts, which look just like natural tooth structure also, and then scan that tooth, design on the computer exactly what we want. And, again, it goes through the milling machine, we put that crown on. And it's a 30, 40-minute procedure as opposed to waiting three-and-a-half to four weeks for your crown to come back, wearing a temporary. In most cases, we don't even have to do that.
